HISTORY OF NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS
IN PHILADELPHIA AND PENNSYLVANIA

This is a book about a vision, a plan, and a program for people with the disease of addiction.

The Birth of Narcotics Anonymous in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania
It's founders; it's trusted servants and all the decisions, commitments and responsibilities that addicts took on while maintaining a drug free lifestyle. This book is about the dedication to make this a worldwide fellowship known as:

"NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS"
It is dedicated to all the addicts who died from the disease of addiction May you rest in peace!

Roy P. was born April 14, 1949; He was raised in California. His father was a Doctor and a drug addict; he died in 1981 from drugs. His dad was in and out of trouble because of his profession. Roy’s father kept boxes and boxes of samples of all different drugs in the closet. It was 1964 and Roy was studying for finales for school, his dad gave him a bottle of Benzedrine. He was only 15 years old, Roy took it and man that is what he was looking for, and it made him feel great! He had tremendous amounts of energy to study his schoolwork. From this point on, he was always in trouble in school. He was known as a discipline problem. He had access to all sorts of drugs; they were all over the house. He became a drug addict.

They lived in San Mateo one county down from San Francisco. Roy was attracted to bikers and hippies; he would steal his father’s drugs and trade them for street drugs. These were the real hippie days Haiti Asbury and long hair. Between his looks and how high he would be, he was thrown out of different restaurants. After using all kinds of drugs for approximately three years, Roy was experiencing a lot of pain and emptiness he took more drugs so, not to feel the pain. Roy was shooting LSD and flipped out he collapsed and had a brake down. He withdrew from people and was acting very strange for about 8-9 months.

In 1967 his parents were scared for his life, they had him court committed and took him to a private mental hospital in Santa Monica, California. He was escorted into the hospital he was a skinny ass speed freak. The hospital was filled with drug addicts and burnouts. He was in a straight jacket and shackled to the bed. Roy was lying there hopeless and for the first time in a long time, he thought about GOD. He asks what he had done to be like this. One positive thing did happen while Roy was here; an A.A. guy that slipped was also at the hospital. He told Roy all about Alcoholics Anonymous A couple months later Roy’s mom came to visit him; he pleaded, begged, and convinces his mom to take him home with her. This was entirely against medical advice (AMA) the Psychiatrist explained to his mother that he just was not ready yet. The Psychiatrist was right, Roy got loaded the night he got out of the hospital only to make matters worse. Roy had a convulsion (GranMal Seizure) that was Roy’s bottom at that time. Roy had mention to his mom about what that guy had said to him about the A.A. meetings. He explained that the man really said, “it works” I would like to try these meetings for myself, but where are they? Roy’s parents had a friend that they knew that went to A.A. his name was Bob L. They called him on the phone and explained Roy’s situation. Like a good A.A. member Bob was there on another twelvestep call. Bob was sober in A.A. for over 20 years and it showed. He was a Jazz musician. Bob knew where all the meetings were.

In the summer of 1968 Bob took Roy to his first A.A. meeting in Palm Springs,
California. Roy felt very uncomfortable everyone was older; they treated him like a little kid. Roy was 19 years old at the time. They were in there 30’s and 40’s. However, Roy really did not want to die, he knew it was life or death so he continued to make A.A. meetings. His mother could not handle the insanity any more between Roy’s and her husbands using drugs she moved back to Philadelphia where she was from. She lived in the Frankford section of Philadelphia on Overington Street. Roy continued to live with his father in California, but he knew in his heart that if he would stay there he would die. Roy made the phone call to dear old mom and next thing he knew he was on a plane to Philadelphia. Roy had a way with his mom plus he was a very good talker. Roy did what he knew to stay sober he made A.A. meetings right here in Philly. He attended a Glenside A.A. meeting in Montgomery County, PA. And met this woman named Annette. He engaged in a conversation with her and the truth just flew off the tip of his tongue. He explained that A.A. made him feel uncomfortable with everyone being older and him being a drug addict and all. She told Roy about this meeting in Philadelphia called Young Men’s Club; she took Roy’s phone number and had this guy call him named Dick F. Dick drove to his house picked him up and off to Young Men’s they went. Roy walked in a little apprehensive not knowing what to aspect.

They were Roofers and Criminals and they even did drugs; he fit in somewhat here. He felt a little more comfortable then in those other meetings. Roy was getting his life together and started missing his father; he went back out to California for a visit. While there he called his old friend Bob L., he told him about the trouble back home feeling out of place. He told him about Young Men’s that he fit in best there. Bob told Roy about this Alcoholics Anonymous Regional Convention in California and invited him to go. Roy went with Bob and it was the right decision, it was the spring of 1969. It was there that Bob introduced Roy to a man and woman who had this Little White Book it was called NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS. It had the letters N.A. on it inside two circles on the front cover (Circa mid to late 60's) It also had two addresses on it. Roy had his regular conversation about not fitting in A.A. and that he was going back to Philadelphia. These two N.A. members gave Roy 1 or two of these pamphlets and said, “This program is for drug addicts, Welcome”. They also asked him to go start some meetings. They understood that young people were not treated right. He could tell they knew what they were talking about when they said, “Alcoholics think that our drug problem isn’t as bad as their problem.” Roy stayed at the convention and hung out with these two recovering drug addicts and Bob for next two days. He picked their brains about all that they knew about N.A.

Roy was excited about getting home and starting a N.A. meeting. Finally, he got his flight back to Philadelphia and boy what a flight it was. Imagine a meeting for drug addicts. When he arrived, he called Dick F. and he ran down his whole experience he had at that A.A. Convention. About the two addicts he had met and how cool they were, they really understood me. They gave me these N.A. books and told me to start meetings here. The next day Roy met Dick and showed him the books. Dick knew a member of Young Men’s Group that was a printer. Roy and Dick both put up money and had 1000 books printed. Dick worked at Eagleville Hospital as a counselor; he put in a request for Roy to start a N.A. meeting at Eagleville. The Hospital was opened in 1909 originally for (TB) Tuberculosis it was called The Philadelphia Jewish Sanatorium for Consumptives. Years had gone by than on July 28, 1965 it started treating men who were suffering from Alcoholism. The sanatorium officially changed its name to Eagleville Hospital and Rehabilitation Center. In 1968, Eagleville pioneers a new approach to addiction treatment and begins treating drugs as well as alcohol addiction. Even through it had been treating drug addicts it was reluctant to let Roy start the meeting. With our Ultimate Authorities love Eagleville finally gave Roy the OK to start the meeting it was the summer of 1969.

Roy was in the Elevators Union and he remembers the first drug addict that attended the meeting. He was a Jewish fellow from Mt. Airy, shortly after that, the meeting was getting 10 to 12 people coming. Six or seven months into it Roy started using again; it was early 1970. Roy does not exactly know what happened to the meeting for sure but he thinks it folded soon after he left. Roy retuned to meetings in 1972 and the meeting was there at Eagleville. Roy was in and out of the meetings and finally in 1973 he stopped using. He met these two brothers Mike S. and Danny S. They took Roy under their wing. They were from the Logan section of Philadelphia. They took Roy to A.A. meetings and started the first N.A. meeting in Philadelphia 13th and Ruscomb Streets. They had meetings between just the three of them. They held meetings at the Sheehan’s parent’s house. Roy relapsed again and lost everything, his Porsche got re-possessed.

September 1970 Dick F. moved to upstate Pennsylvania. He was involved in starting a new drug and alcohol treatment facility known as White Deer Run, located in Allenwood Pa. Approximately 1971 four men went to White Deer Run at Dicks request to start NA meetings in the facility and the surrounding neighborhood, mission accomplished. At a later date guys who knew Dick from Young Men’s traveled to Dicks house to throw him a
ceremonial party to celebrate Dick helping his first Drug addict, Roy P. He attended with several other people. Many addicts were a great inspiration to NA. Roy’s question was how it worked with all the drug talk. However, it did. “I don’t know how people stayed clean” Roy said, “Meetings were like organized insanity”. AA guys would come to NA just to hit on the NA women. Roy remembers an informal NA meeting at Holy Child Church; they went through the formats and everything. Roy was still having a tough time staying clean. He came back to meetings again and made the Levittown meeting there were fifteen people there. Then he went to the Springfield meeting they had 25-30 addicts there. On a Sunday, Roy stopped by the Norristown meeting there were 30-40- addicts in attendance. Roy noticed that Narcotics Anonymous was growing. He knew when people were discharged from
Eagleville Hospital they went to a halfway house located in Norristown. They were sent to NA meetings as a condition to reside in the house.

NARCOTICS ANONYMOUS WAS GROWING IN PENNSYLVANIA

1969

Roy P. brought white book back from Santa Monica, California. Eagleville Hospital gave Roy permission to start NA meeting summer of 1969. Dick F., a counselor at Eagleville, was instrumental in helping Roy start the meeting.
Eagleville Hospital was the first H & I meeting.

1970

Several men were treated at Eagleville Hospital for their addiction. These same men started Narcotics Anonymous meetings all over Pennsylvania. Dick F. left employment at Eagleville Hospital to help start a treatment facility called White Deer Run located in Allenwood, Pa.

1971

Boulevard Group was started at the First Christian Church of Christ 10th and Roosevelt Blvd. Philadelphia Pa. This was the first meeting in Philadelphia. Four men traveled to White Deer Run at the request of Dick F. to aid in starting N.A. meetings in the area and at the treatment facility. White Deer Run was the second H & I meeting. The
members were Bob K., Ronnie M., Dutch H., and Brian T. This meeting was recorded on tape. The White Deer Run Meeting was stopped because Dick insisted on taking "urines" and the addicts had to pay for them out of their own pockets. As a result the addicts got angry and the meeting was stopped. An N.A. Meeting was started at Eagleville Outpatient in Norristown.

1972

The Lewisburg group was organized on January 24,1972 in Lewisburg Pa. Williamsport group hosted its first meeting on September 22,1972. When the group was formed, five addicts had been clean for more than one year. Eagleville Outpatient N.A. meeting moved to St. Augustine Church Green & Basin Sts. Norristown, PA, Tuesday Night 8:30. This meeting was Co-Founded by Bob M. and Rich M. Norristown meeting was under surveillance at this time, there were two cops when you went in the meeting and two cops when you left. One evening there was a knock at the door it was two cops, they had this guy they pushed him into the meeting and said we’re tired of
arresting this guy see what you can do to help him. The guy stayed clean for a few months and the cops did not come back.

LITERATURE
At the end of 1978, there was a paper strike in California, which affected our area since we
purchase our pamphlets and books from the World Service Office in California. Literature
was almost non -existent at meetings. After several months of waiting for the strike to end in
Calif., our Area Service decided it would be best if we took the N.A. books and Pamphlets &
had them recopied. This decision was not meant to step on any body's toes. Area Services
felt that it was important to have Literature on our tables when a new comer or an old
comer came to a meeting.

PUBLIC SPEAKING
Public speaking is another way of spreading the message. We are always open for invitations to speak at schools, church groups, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, etc. If you hear of or know of any place looking for a public speaker call Rance 666-5151 or any other N.A. delegate of Inter-group. Recently we had the opportunity to speak on a local radio station. This was handle well by two members of the fellowship.

1980

January 1980
Hulmeville Steppers formed Sunday Nights 8:30 (3 Groups in Bucks County)

February 1980
Hulmville Friendship group formed Sat. Night 6:30, 10 to 25 members, -This group was
formed at this time with the intention that members could get together afterwards for
fellowship on a Sat. Night This added greatly to the unity in Bucks County NA. (Four groups
in Bucks)

April 1980
“Hulmville Step Reform Committee” formed. This committee was formed for the purpose of writing & compiling N.A. steps for the Hulmville Steppers group to use in their meetings. The group conscience of this group had reached a decision that use of A.A. 12 & 12 was indirect violation of the sixth Tradition, and removes it from their tables. Members in this group conscience meeting felt about the need to continue this as a step meeting for their own
survival & recovery, thus the decision to write N.A. steps. The committee consisted of 5-10 members who met weekly in a member’s house; they talked about their experiences and feelings about each step, recording their discussions on tape. One member then transcribed the discussions from the tapes and began to edit the discussions into a readable format. This committee continued to meet weekly working on a different step each week, in order, 1
through 12. After completing through the sixth step, several members attended the first East Coast Convention in Lewisburg, PA. There they met members from Georgia, California, Nebraska, Kansas and other places, who had been working on compiling an N.A. Basic Text for Recovery. In this way, Bucks County became a part of the N.A. World Literature Movement. The “Hulmville Step Reform Committee” Registered with the World Literature
Committee. And became known as the “Bristol Literature Committee.” They returned to Bucks County and continued their efforts to write the 12 Steps of N.A. They now received a lot of support from other committees in Atlanta and other places, through regular correspondence and telephone communications. All of these various committees around the fellowship were united by a common bond and purpose - to carry the message of recovery to the Addict-who-still-suffers, through the written word. The “Bristol Lit. Com.” began to draw up outlines for each step as they worked. Finished material was then typed up and copied and sent to Georgia, where all input was being gathered by Bo S., who was the World Literature Committee Chairman. When they finished working on the 12 Steps, one member George R. traveled out to the second World Literature Conference in Lincoln, Nebraska to
learn more about literature work and to share what we were learning though our efforts. George returned with several new techniques, such as “snip & paste”, which helped to speed up the work and George had a rejuvenated spirit to share. The committee then began to write the 12 Traditions of N.A. The tape recorder was no longer used. They took a pad of paper and a pen and began writing. After everyone was finished writing. All the writing material was gathered together in the middle of the room and then redistributed, making sure that you did not work on the material that you had written. With a scissors and a glue stick, words, sentences and paragraphs were cut apart, moved around, and glued back together. The end result was usually one completed tradition in one sitting, reading as if one person had written it. The feeling was that we individuals were not doing the writing. We were merely being used, as instruments by a loving GOD working through us, was overwhelming and clearly evident at times like this.

Halfway through the Traditions, this committee had dwindled down to two active members. The others were either burned-out, had other commitments or were getting loaded again. The Bristol Literature Committee then moved down to Northeast Philly, where many members (mostly newcomers) were willing and filled with the spirit of N.A. They met in a girl’s apartment (one bedroom), and there were usually 15 to 25 members participating in each meeting. When the Traditions were completed, this committee began to receive bulk packages of input for different chapters of the book. They would type the material up, take it through the snip and paste process, make copies and pass it on to Atlanta. The committee was now known as the “Philadelphia Literature Committee” Several members from Bucks County were still actively involved in this committees work, and remained involved until all of the work was completed.

“Recovering Addict Inc.” A club House Committee formed in Ivyland, PA. for the purpose of starting a clubhouse for N.A. meetings to be held. This committee consisted of four addicts with a dream. They drew up a charter, incorporated the committee, and began to hold fundraisers within the fellowship. They held dances, spaghetti dinners, all-night meetings followed by a sunrise breakfast, 50-50 drawings, & addithons. This effort was very unifying for Bucks County and Philadelphia as it brought many addicts to have fun, it gave members something to do, within four months, $650.00 had been raised. They ran into some trouble with having the clubhouse here, they had great difficulty finding a place for the clubhouse.

Dear:

The purpose of this letter is to acquaint you with Narcotics Anonymous. N.A. is a fellowship of recovering drug addicts who meet regularly to help each other to stay clean and drug-free. We charge no dues or fees; we are fully self-supportive through our own contributions.

Enclosed you will find information that further explains the N.A. program, as well as a meeting list for the Bucks County area. We also operate a 24-hour HOTLINE service to aid those who want to stop using drugs. The number for the area is 276-2307. It is in operation (7) days a week.

We sincerely hope you will consider us when referring drug addicts who want to stay free of the habit.

N.A. Regional Service Meeting Harrisburg.
Guido A. brought up the fact that Pittsburgh Area Service wants to join our Regional Service Group a discussion on where to hold future Regional Service Meetings followed. A motion was approved that we continue holding the biannual Regional Service Meetings in Harrisburg, which would be a central location.
In other business, Bob P. who served as delegate from Pennsylvania to the last N.A. World Service Conference in California gave the following report. The pink pamphlet entitled “We Made a Decision” is no longer approved by the conference. It will be discontinued because it was copied directly from another program. The conference resolved that any N.A. group using A.A. 12 and 12 Book couldn’t be listed in the N.A. World Directory. “The Voice” is
putting out literature on the steps each month. Bo S. has more than enough material for the N.A. Big Book but the material must be approved by the Conference before publication. In Pennsylvania, the non-profit corporation number for N.A. is 790905 and the I.R.S. taxexempt number is 78-869 Key rings with N.A. logo are not being sold by N.A.

Re: Bucks County forming an Area Service Committee
G.S.R.'s an Addithon was held to support the Phila. Literature Review Committee. During the Addithon, a workshop was held to discuss the possibility of Bucks County forming an Area Service Committee. All members present of the workshop felt that, in order for the Bucks County fellowship to grow and still serve the needs of both the recovering addict, and the addict who still suffers in the Bucks County Area, we need to form our own Area Service Committee. But only a small amount of the Bucks County Fellowship were present at the workshop, and we realize that, in order for such a decision to be made, the Bucks County fellowship, as a whole, should be present of represented. To better inform you and the members of your group, we have enclosed with this letter the minutes from the March 27th workshop, and a proposed agenda for an ad hoc committee meeting set forth by that
workshop.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PHILA. REORGANIZATION
The What? (5 - new Areas and 1 - New Region)
Area #1-All Phila. Meetings (approx. 25 mtgs-19 Groups)
Area #2-Montc. County meetings (approx-10)
Area #3-All Delaware & Delaware County meetings (approx. 6)
Area #4-All Bucks County meetings (approx. 14)
Area #5-All South Jersey meetings (approx. 9)
Numbers of meetings according to June meeting list.
The How?
1.Each Area Service Committee continues to meet on the 2nd. Sun. of the Month.
2.The Regional Service Committee would meet on a quarterly basis (Jan., April, July, & Oct.) on the 3rd Sunday.
3.The new Region could handle most of the services that the Phila. A.S.C. has now.
Example, HOT LINE, Literature Review, Public Information, Prison/Institutions, etc. This could be done until each of the new Areas is ready to do them.
4.The new Region could print a Regional Meeting list once or twice a year.
The new Areas could print their own meeting list as needed.
Both the R.S.C. & A.S.C.'s could charge enough to cover the printing cost.
5.Each new Area would only be responsible for:
A.) A $20 minimum donation monthly to the Region to cover the cost of the Hotline.
B.) The only other expenses would be for a meeting place & supplies.
6.Continue as many of the current officers, from our area to new Region that would be willing to serve. This would help the new Region get started with experience people. Possible they could serve for a six-month term, until elections could be held.
The When?
1. As Early as Oct. 1982
2. As Late as Jan. 1983
3. Whatever date we chose-We should try and do it together so we can maintain unity in spirit and in service.

REPORT ON THE FORMATION OF A GREATER PHILADELPHIA REGION
The purpose of this report is to define some of the issues involved in the formation of a Greater Philadelphia Regional Service Committee out of the old Phila. Area Service Committee. The report also makes several suggestions and proposals about how to achieve this, but these are included more for the purpose of stimulating discussion then any thing else and are not meant to be binding. Nor does the report attempt to cover all the issues that are involved in the undertaking.
As of this time four new area service committees have been formed--Philadelphia, Bucks County, Southern New Jersey, and Delaware State-County. Mean while a fifth--Montgomery County--is in the making. It would seem, therefore, that a Regional Service Committee is the logical next step.
The main issues to be considered are the following:
TREASURY: The old Phila. A.S.C. treasury contains $500.00+. Since the groups who would comprise a Greater Philadelphia R.S.C. donated this money and since many of the new R.S.C.'s functions, i.e. the hotline, need to be well financed; it might be best to have the entire treasury revert to the new R.S.C. COMMITTEES: The following committees of the old Philadelphia A.S.C. should be absorbed intact into the Greater Phila. R.S.C.
1) Hotline
2) Literature Review-the current policy of the W.S.C. is to encourage the development of literature on a regional level.
3) Literature-The old Philadelphia Area Literature Committee has a $1,000.00+ worth of literature in its stockpile. This should be sold off before any changes made in this committee.
The following are committees the new R.S.C. might want to form:
1) Finance
2) Public Information
3) Hospitals and Institutions
4) Newsletter
5) Activities- the old A.S.C. Entertainment Committee could very well be the nucleus of an Activities Committee, but they would have to be a change in its emphasis.
OFFICERS: For the purpose of continuity and orderly transition, a previous report suggested that the officers of the old Philadelphia A.S.C. be the temporary officers of the new R.S.C. for a period of three or six months. The officers have agreed to this. It might also be remembered that if the Mid-Atlantic Region disbands, several of its officers are now from the Greater Philadelphia Region and could also offer us their expertise and experience.
MEMBERSHIP: A question that will need to be discussed is what areas will comprise the new R.S.C. Will the number be limited to the areas formed from the old A.S.C. or will membership be open to any area that desires it?
1.) Regional Service will be held in Phila. and be open to any area, but we should not have the meeting anywhere but Phila.
2.) Region formed
3.) Oct. 17th 1982 2:00 1st R.S.C. meeting at usual place.
4.) Region will do elections when necessary.
5.) All assets & Liabilities from the A.S.C. will be turned over to the region.
